After addressing this, and alleviating their concerns about unlearning, the Lord presents another situation that may deeply unsettle their spirits: the betrayal by friends and family. He predicts this event so that, if it occurs unexpectedly, they are not taken aback. Such treachery weighs heavily on the heart, as David expresses, "For it is not the enemy who taunts me—then I could bear it; it is you, my equal, my companion" (Psalms 54:13, 14), and once more, "He who has eaten my bread has lifted his heel against me" (Psalms 40:10). Refer to the Commentary on (Luke 21:19) for further insight.

By addressing the roots of human frailty, He informs them that they will experience betrayal from brothers, friends, and family.

The least sorrow we experience usually stems from external misfortunes. However, far more unbearable are the afflictions brought upon us by those we believed would show us kindness, as these not only inflict physical pain but also torment us with the anguish of lost affection. This is why the Lord, speaking through the Psalmist, addresses Judas the betrayer: ‘If an enemy would revile me, I would endure it; and if he who hates me would speak against me, I would hide me from him. But thou, O man of indifference, my companion and my confidant, with whom I have shared fellowship: in the house of God we walked together in harmony (Ps.

54:13ff.).’ Furthermore, it is said: ‘The man of my peace, in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me (Psalms 40:10).’ This clearly illustrates that the betrayal of the traitor caused me deeper pain precisely because I expected loyalty from one who seemed to be among my own. Thus, as all the elect are united with the Supreme Head, they too will align with Him in their sufferings. In their final moments, they will perceive as adversaries those whom they once trusted, and the reward for their afflictions will be amplified in direct relation to the harm brought about by the betrayal of a once-revered love.

Instead of idly awaiting the conclusion of this age, it is vital for you to concentrate on your own lives and responsibilities. You face particular peril (Luke 21:12): before widespread disasters commence, you will encounter various tribulations. Despite your righteousness, you will face animosity from all nations, and the envious hostility of both Jews and Gentiles will be directed at you. You shall endure persecution, imprisonment, disgrace, torture, and even death. In a frenzy of blind prejudice, those closest to you—parents, siblings, and friends—may become your adversaries, betraying and endangering you. Many of you will sacrifice your lives for my sake. Yet be uplifted!

Amidst all these tribulations, the guiding hand and love of your heavenly Father will be with you; not a single hair will perish from your head without His sovereign will. During these times, you will find numerous opportunities to bear witness in your local synagogues and in foreign courts, to proclaim my name before rulers and authorities. When these moments arise, do not anticipate what you will say or how you will articulate it; for it is the Holy Spirit who will speak through you. I will grant you such eloquence and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to counter your words. More profound and perilous than any persecution will be the moral decay that weakens the bonds of love even among your community; divisions and hostilities will emerge, and betrayal will arise from within your own ranks. False prophets and teachers will emerge within your society. Trust will wane, love and friendship will grow cold, and faith itself may seem dim. You will face trying times, but those of you whom I have chosen for such moments must strive to redeem your souls with patience. He that endureth to the end shall be saved (Luke 21:19; Matthew 24:13).

Alexander Gorsky

The needs of the disciples and their current state did not necessitate a complete unveiling of the plans associated with the establishment of His kingdom. Consequently, the Lord disclosed the future to them only to the extent needed to correct their misconceptions and alert them to the challenges that lay ahead, thus providing guidance for other believers as well. "He shall return to His Father; in His absence, there will be others scattered under His name. Do not believe that this is how He will manifest on earth now. There will be conflict, and the end of the age is not yet upon us. Battles will erupt, plagues will ensue, famines, and earthquakes will occur; all of these are merely the initial signs of suffering—exercise patience.

The destiny of the Lord’s disciples, regardless of who they are, will be particularly severe: persecution, animosity, moral failure, and temptation will all loom over them. Both truth and love will become increasingly rare among them. All of this indicates the nearness of the end, which will arrive when the Gospel has been proclaimed to all creation."

The severity of the tribulation will be particularly evident in the betrayal of believers by their own family members and the widespread animosity toward Christians. Matthew adds that many will be led astray from their faith, and numerous false prophets will emerge within the Christian community to deceive many. This will occur alongside an increase in wickedness, causing the love of many to grow cold. However, the Savior foretold one hopeful sign in the last days, namely, the proclamation of the Gospel across the entire world. Those familiar with church history can easily see how profoundly this was realized during the apostolic age.

Gladkow B.I.

When the Christian faith was deemed dangerous and believers were targeted for elimination, a dreadful conflict erupted within families of mixed religious backgrounds. The authorities insisted that Christians be reported, leading to a tragic cycle where brothers turned against brothers, fathers accused their children, and children denounced their parents. In this atmosphere, enmity and betrayal flourished, overshadowing love, which was effectively exiled, making the very term Christian detestable to many non-believers.

This scenario fulfilled the words of Jesus Christ, who foretold: “Then many will be tempted, and will betray one another, and will hate one another” (Matthew 24:10); “and brother will betray brother to death, and father to children; and children will rise up against parents and kill them” (Mark 13:12); “and because of the multiplication of iniquity, love will grow cold in many” (Matthew 24:12); “and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake” (Mark 13:13).
