Some seed lands among thorns and is suffocated by the thorns that have sprouted, resulting in a lack of fruit. Similarly, many individuals receive the message of God, yet due to the challenges of this world and the allure of wealth, their hearts become entangled with thorns and fail to produce any fruit. Consequently, for them, the word of God yields no results. Thus, dear Christian, we observe that the distractions of this world act like thorns, stifling the word of God that has been planted in the heart. It is essential to remove these detrimental thorns from within and to heed the counsel of the Apostle: “Do not love the world or the things that are in the world” (1 John 2:15). If not, the seed of God's word will remain unproductive.

These are the secrets of the kingdom shared with the people through parables, often without further clarification; they are revealed only to the close group of disciples and specifically to the first two. When the disciples inquired of the Lord about the meaning of this parable concerning the seed, He clarified it for them and provided additional guidance for their apostolic mission using parables that were more familiar (Mk. 4:21-25; Lk. 8:16-18). The fruit of the Word within them should manifest in their preaching, where the depth of each individual's passion will reflect the depth of the message of the Word itself.

The seed fell among thorns, which grew and choked it. This seed did not land in the thornbushes themselves but in the soil from where they had been removed, although some roots of the thorns remained. If Jesus intended to refer to the already established thornbushes, He would not have stated that the thorns grew. After being sown on seemingly well-prepared ground, the remnants of the thorn roots began to sprout. The sown seed also emerged, but the rapidly growing thorn shoots overshadowed it, stripping it of light, draining the soil of moisture, and hindering the proper growth of the seed; it developed into a weak stalk that bore no ear or grain.

Being sown among thorns represents those who hear the Word, yet the worries of this life, the allure of wealth, and other desires enter in, choking the Word so that it remains unfruitful (Mk. 4:18). These individuals receive God's Word, but it does not bring them to life: the pleasures of existence (Luke 8:14), the chase for riches, vanity, and societal biases consume their attention, preventing them from being fortified in faith; thus, they gradually forget the divine message and it remains barren. Such people understand that attaining eternal joy in the Kingdom of Heaven would be beneficial, yet the world immediately presents its earthly attractions. They reason that eternal happiness will come eventually, but youth, worldly enjoyment, and wealth are fleeting and must be seized while they can; they believe repentance and living by God's commandments can wait, and engaging with worldly goods won't hinder future contemplation of the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the thinking of those whose spiritual nourishment is choked by thorns; they fail to see the thorns multiplying and that the weakened stalk of the Word within them is becoming thinner. Eventually, there will come a time when it is not only difficult but too late to uproot the thorns, and they overlook the reality that one cannot serve both God and wealth and that none knows the day or the hour of their call back from this life.

The sower of the seed symbolizes the divine Messenger who delivers God's Word, while the seed represents those who hear this message. Some listeners resemble the seed that fell along the path, where it was eaten by birds and trampled by travelers. These individuals possess a hardened and unresponsive spirit, where God’s Word finds no fertile ground to flourish. Consequently, it is either quickly taken away by the evil one or lost and diminished amid worldly distractions. Other listeners are likened to the seed cast on rocky terrain, where there is just a bit of soil but insufficient depth for roots to develop. These individuals embrace God's Word with enthusiasm; however, it fails to take root in their hearts.

Faced with trials and worldly pressures, they easily discard it, leading it to fade away within them. Meanwhile, the seed that falls among thorns represents those who hear the Word and allow it to grow. Yet, the worries of this life and the allure of wealth ultimately suffocate God's Word, rendering it unproductive. In contrast, the seed that falls on good soil signifies those who not only hear the Word but also comprehend it, resulting in a bountiful harvest, with some producing a hundredfold, others sixtyfold, and still others thirtyfold.
