Theophylact of Bulgaria
At last, the Lord has all the people arranged on the grass in distinct rows as though they were seated at individual tables.
And he commanded them that they should make them all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
και επεταξεν αυτοις ανακλιναι παντας συμποσια συμποσια επι τω χλωρω χορτω

At last, the Lord has all the people arranged on the grass in distinct rows as though they were seated at individual tables.
The Lord showed mercy as five loaves and two fish were multiplied to nourish five thousand listeners through His abundant grace, leaving each of the apostles with a basketful of remnants. This event echoed the provision of manna during the exodus and other miraculous acts in the Old Testament. The crowd, astonished by this wonder, recognized Him as the prophet foretold by Moses and sought to elevate Jesus to kingship. However, He withdrew to a solitary place on the mountain to pray, instructing His disciples to return across the sea without Him. Consequently, the people's aspirations remained unfulfilled.
Observing the skepticism of His disciples, Jesus swiftly demonstrates His omnipotence. To ensure they understand the exact number of individuals He intends to nourish, He instructs them to arrange the crowds in groups on the lush grass, setting them in rows of fifty. This method allows them to tally the attendees accurately, resulting in a total of approximately five thousand men, not including women and children.
Yet Christ, in His mercy, had already cautioned them about their anxieties and directly alerted Philip to the challenge at hand. A brief encounter ensued. It would have taken no less than two hundred denarii to purchase even a morsel of bread for such an enormous crowd; however, even if they possessed that amount in their communal funds, there was neither the time nor the chance to acquire the needed provisions. Andrew pointed out that a young lad had five barley loaves and two small fish, though it was evident that this meager offering seemed insignificant. "Have them sit down," Christ responded with tranquility (Matt. 14:13-21, Mk. 6:30-44, Lk. 9:10-17, Jn. 6:1-15).
