Theophylact of Bulgaria

Christ provides sustenance, beginning with the more significant and precious nourishment of His word, followed by physical sustenance. In a symbolic interpretation, the five loaves represent the five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The two fish symbolize the messages of the fishermen—the Apostle and the Gospel. These elements serve as the nourishment for our five senses, represented by the five thousand individuals.

Prudentius

In the desert, He instructed the crowds to partake of five loaves and two fish. The disciples surrounded the Master, forgetting their own needs. They showed little concern for worldly sustenance, dismissing villages, towns, fortifications, and commerce, eager to be fed by His abundant teachings. The brethren arranged themselves on the grass in groups of one hundred. There was an endless supply of food—truly, it is the work of God! With just two fish and a few loaves remaining, no one went hungry, and the food kept multiplying.

The Lord showed His mercy by miraculously providing for five thousand listeners with only five loaves and two fish from His abundant gift, resulting in each of the apostles gathering a basket of leftovers. This event echoed the manna provided in the wilderness and other miraculous occurrences found in the Old Testament. The crowd, astonished by such a sign, recognized Him as the prophet foretold by Moses and sought to elevate Jesus as their king. However, He chose to retreat alone to the mountain to pray, instructing His disciples to return to the other side without Him. Consequently, the people were left without the fulfillment of their hopes.

Without understanding that He who resurrects the dead and restores sight to the blind, speech to the mute, and strength to the paralytic also has the power to provide for the needy, the Apostle Andrew, the brother of Peter, approaches Jesus and remarks, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?” (John 6:7).

However, out of His deep compassion, Christ had forewarned them about their anxieties and made Philip aware of the challenge they faced. A brief discussion ensued. It would have taken at least two hundred denarii to purchase even a small amount of bread for such a large crowd; yet, even if they had access to that sum in their shared funds, there was neither the time nor the means to acquire the needed resources. Andrew pointed out that one boy possessed five barley loaves and two fish, but such a meager supply seemed hardly worth noting. “Have them sit down,” Christ responded with calm assurance.
