How many among God's people earnestly strive to observe His commandments, but are hindered in their good intentions not just by financial constraints and poverty, but also by the influential examples of others?

These individuals, though they may appear pious, impose heavy demands and prioritize earthly matters over the spiritual welfare of those they are meant to guide, neglecting to provide for their eternal salvation through teaching, modeling righteous living, or demonstrating fervent dedication to acts of devotion. How we long for a figure like Nehemiah, a true comforter from the Lord, to arise in our times to prevent our waywardness, to ignite in our hearts a passion for the divine, and to empower us to redirect our efforts from earthly pleasures to the edification of Christ’s kingdom!
Let us examine the situation more closely. The distressed complaints of the exhausted populace arose on three distinct fronts. Some, driven by starvation, were willing to sell their own children to wealthier individuals in exchange for sustenance; others, eager to protect their children, preferred to part with their lands and homes for food; while yet others resisted the forfeiture of both children and property, resorting instead to borrowing money to meet tax obligations to the king, mortgaging their fields and vineyards until the day of grain abundance returned, allowing them to repay their debts.
