Nehemiah 6:10Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And I went into the house of Samaia the son of Delaia, the son of Metabeel privately. And he said: Let us consult together in the house of God in the midst of the temple: and let us shut the doors of the temple, for they will come to kill thee, and in the night they will come to slay thee.

Faced with mounting hostility from his adversaries, Nehemiah visits the residence of Shemaiah, expecting a warm reception from a comrade. However, he discovers that Shemaiah has betrayed him, having accepted bribes from his foes and formed alliances with them. The faithful often endure external assaults and internal trepidations, as noted in 2 Corinthians 7:5. This was not only the experience of the apostles; prophets too encountered peril from their fellow believers, threats from the Gentiles, and dangers posed by false brethren, as illustrated in 2 Corinthians 11:26.
