The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Our journey of liberation from bondage is not guided by Moses, but by Christ. Yet what must we do to avoid falling into the same pitfall? We must refrain from repeating their mistakes, thereby escaping a similar fate. They complained and showed ingratitude, which cautions us against such behavior. Why did they all falter? It was due to their loss of hope for the promised land they earnestly sought. What led them to scorn it? Was it not because they were overwhelmed by its majesty? They were indulged and unwilling to face the hardships of the journey for the sake of reaching it. Therefore, let us not overlook the promises of heaven; this indeed would be a grave neglect.
