John Chrysostom

The dignity of the priesthood is truly noble. When some treacherous individuals challenged Aaron, seeking to strip him of his position and question his honor, the humble Moses, aiming to demonstrate through action that Aaron was not elevated simply because he was his brother and relative, but rather because the priesthood was bestowed upon him in accordance with God's will, instructed that a staff should be presented from each tribe, including one for Aaron.

Gregory of Nyssa

4th centuryChurch Father

For the profound assurance of the people that the divine gift of priesthood is bestowed upon those who are sanctified for this role, Moses gathers the staffs from the leaders of each tribe. He marks each staff with the name of its respective tribal leader, including Aaron's priestly staff, and places them in the tabernacle. In the subsequent covenant, he teaches that the priesthood is a sacred calling originating from God rather than a mere human assignment. To illustrate this, Moses sets the staffs of each tribe, identified by the names of their donors, upon the altar, so that the staff, which is miraculously distinguished from the others, may testify as a sign of divine ordination.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Despite the discontent expressed among the house of Reuben and the Levites, the staffs from all the tribes were assembled and laid within the ark. This was done to prevent those who complained from questioning, "Why was the staff of the house of Reuben not chosen, while the staffs of the house of Judah and the house of Gad were?" Consequently, Moses established the rods from all the tribes to dismiss all grievances and to protect the house of Aaron from the widespread resentment directed toward it.
