The Levites are thus designated as helpers in a specific capacity, serving as attendants to the priestly duties. “Let them be on guard for him,” which clearly refers to Aaron, “for all the things of the tabernacle of the congregation, and let them be on guard for the children of Israel.” This indicates their role in providing assistance. Aaron and his sons are placed over the tabernacle: “and let them keep,” as stated, “all the things of the tabernacle of the congregation,” including the inner veil, symbolizing the sacred and hidden aspects, along with all that is necessary for those who approach the Divine altar. This serves as a representation of Christ, whom the Father has appointed over His house, with “His house being us” (Heb. 3:6).

What responsibilities did the priests and Levites hold? This is conveyed by the Lord Himself. For it is stated, ‘The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Feed the tribe of Levi, and set me before Aaron a priest, and let them serve him: and let his watchmen, and the watchmen of the children of Israel, shoot before the tabernacle of the vision, to do the work of the tabernacle: And let them keep all the vessels of the tabernacle of the vision, and the guards of the children of Israel, and all the works of the tabernacle: and let the Levites be given unto Aaron thy brother, and unto his sons the priests: as a gift these were given unto me of the children of Israel.

And thou shalt set Aaron and his sons over the tabernacle, and let them keep their priesthood, and all that are by the altar, and within the veil: but the foreigner that toucheth them shall die’ (Num. 3: 5-10).

From this passage, we understand that the priests performed sacrifices while the Levites were designated as helpers to the priests and custodians of the Tabernacle. Additionally, Moses goes on to detail the specific garments that were to be worn by the descendants of Kohath, Gershon, and Merari.
