Cyrill of Alexandria
Concerning the widow and widower, he offers distinct clarifications and wisely asserts that their commitments must be honored without exception. He consistently criticizes those who are free and outside the covenant of marriage if they fail to uphold their promises. Yet, he rightly allows exceptions for those who are powerless and under the authority of others. In such instances, the leaders—namely, the father and husband—who have given their consent and approval to the vows of those they govern, are held accountable for impiety if they refuse to fulfill their promises. Moreover, if they do not give their consent, he provides for the forgiveness of sins, because what is dedicated to God must stem from a willing heart rather than coercion (Num. 30:10-17).
