Cyrill of Alexandria
It seems clear to everyone that the law would appear unjust if it were to hold us accountable for actions performed out of necessity and against our will. Why should we face punishment for bodily suffering, and would it be fair for the law to blame someone afflicted in body? Therefore, it is both logical and essential to view physical ailments as symbols reflecting mental struggles. This understanding allows the law to become spiritual, representing a fair judgment that is divinely appointed for every situation. It administers punishment not to those who have encountered involuntary suffering, but to those whose wrongdoing warrants just retribution. See Lev. 13, Lev. 15, Num. 9:1-14.
