It seems clear to all that the law would appear unjust if it held us accountable for actions that occur out of necessity and against our will. Why should we impose punishment for physical suffering, and would it be fair for the law to fault someone who is afflicted in their body? Therefore, it is both fitting and essential to view bodily ailments as symbols and illustrations of mental struggles. This perspective is the only way the law can be spiritual, allowing us to perceive God’s pronouncements as just judgments applicable to all situations—meting out penalties not on those who suffer involuntarily but on those whose deliberate actions warrant rightful punishment. Refer to Leviticus 13, Leviticus 15, and Numbers 9:1-14.
