Why did the Lord designate the Levites to minister in the tabernacle from the ages of twenty-five to fifty (Num. 8:24-26)? This is because younger individuals often lack the maturity needed to distinguish clearly between good and evil, while older ones may grapple with physical weakness. Thus, God relieves both the young and the elderly from this duty—the youths due to a lack of discernment and the older individuals due to their frail condition.

Paterius of Brescia

7th centuryChurch Father

What is signified by the twenty-fifth year, when the flower of youth begins to bloom amidst the battle against every sin? And what does the fiftieth year represent, when the season of jubilee arrives, but a deep inner rest following the end of conflict? The vessels of the tabernacle symbolize the souls of the faithful. Thus, let the Levites serve in the tabernacle starting from the twenty-fifth year, and from the fiftieth year, let them oversee the vessels. This indicates that those who are still engaged in the struggle against vices, which tempt them with pleasure, should not assume the responsibility of caring for others. As long as the chosen are still combating these temptations, they should remain in submission and service, dedicating themselves to labor and responsibilities.

However, once their battle with temptation concludes, and they no longer seek anxious peace for themselves, they may then be entrusted with the care of other souls. In a time of peace, when the intensity of temptation diminishes, they take on the role of guardians of the vessels, as they become teachers of souls.
