Cyrill of Alexandria
The census, which is initiated after a month's time, illustrates that even the shortcomings of the saints can be pleasing and acceptable to God. The establishment of a specific age range for sacred tasks, from twenty-five to fifty years, suggests that those who are capable and robust can render exemplary and blameless service to God. A person who is twenty-five falls within this suitable category, as does someone who has reached the age of fifty. However, an individual beyond fifty begins to experience the decline of vitality and is no longer in their prime, heading towards the challenges that come with aging. It follows that neither the unwise nor the powerless can serve God faultlessly, for it is evident that true works are those rooted in strength and sound judgment, oriented toward virtue, and earning the approval of the Lawgiver.
