The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Christ has endowed the Church with His radiance, illuminating those who dwell in ignorance and error, akin to those lost in the night and shadow. He reigns like a flame, bestowing spiritual understanding upon them. For those already enlightened, who possess the light of Christ in their hearts, He bestows His presence, enveloping and nurturing them with the heavenly comforts provided by the Holy Spirit. This phenomenon is symbolized by the fire during the night and the cloud by day. The uninitiated greatly require this divine guidance to gain knowledge of God, while those who have come to faith need support and strength to endure the trials of life and its challenges. As it is written, ‘all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus shall be persecuted’ (2 Tim. 3:12).
