It is also stated: In the reverence of the Lord lies steadfast hope (Proverbs 14:26). When one acknowledges the consequences of wrongdoing, they come to cherish the blessings that ensue. Thus, the awareness of potential punishment helps to uphold a righteous life, which is affirmed by a clear conscience; in such a conscience, there is no reason to dread punishment. Consequently, those who seek to be free from fear must learn to embrace a healthy reverence.

Clement of Alexandria

Awe represents a reverence for God. However, if one considers fear to be a fervent state of mind, as some of our adversaries suggest, it follows that not all forms of fear result in mental distress. The fear associated with demonic entities is marked by a tumultuous spirit, reflecting the turmoil that the demons themselves experience both externally and internally. Conversely, God remains untroubled, which means that the fear of God does not create confusion within the soul. Ultimately, it is not God’s presence that incites fear but rather the anxiety of being separated from Him. This specific kind of fear revolves around the dread of succumbing to the shackles of evil—the fear rooted in the wickedness of the world. It embodies the longing for eternal life and the yearning for liberation from unholy desires.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

When one experiences happiness and wealth, they often find themselves surrounded by numerous companions. However, when adversity strikes and poverty sets in, those friends quickly abandon them. True wealth lies in wisdom and reverence for God; even a ruler's greatness is measured by the size of their following. A king ought to embody patience, humility, and compassion for the less fortunate. It is through wisdom and integrity that a leader uplifts their people, and the monarch’s favor is bestowed primarily upon loyal servants, especially upon the humble, for humility is highly regarded in the eyes of God.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

In reverence to the Lord lies the assurance of strength, and He will bequeath His children a lasting tranquility. The reverence of the Lord serves as a solid foundation throughout life. Those who honor God place their trust in Him, and their confidence will not lead to disgrace. The Lord, in whom they rely, safeguards their peace and well-being through His might, rescuing them from distress and hardship. Not only does one draw upon God's strength and protection, but he also bequeaths enduring peace to his offspring. Children who receive the fear of God from their father will likewise inherit His blessings. ‘The Lord will give strength to his people, the Lord will bless his people with peace’ (Psalm 28:11).
