Scripture affirms that He will rescue the soul of the faithful witness from the wicked (Proverbs 14:25). A faithful witness embodies a clear conscience; it will save the soul that adheres to its guidance from sins before death and from eternal anguish afterward. Just as a knife is honed by a stone, the conscience is refined through Christ—it is illuminated by contemplation and polished by obedience to the commandments of the Gospel. A conscience that is both enlightened and perfected by the Gospel reveals to a person his sins, even the tiniest, in a detailed and transparent manner. Do not mistreat your adversary—your own conscience! If you do, you will forfeit your spiritual liberty as sin ensnares and binds you. The Prophet mourns for those who disregard their conscience, who turn against themselves: ‘Soodole Ephraim his rival, and trampled on the judgement, because he began to walk after vanity’ (Hosea 5:11).

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A person is surrounded by many companions as long as they are prosperous and joyful, but once they fall into poverty, they find themselves abandoned. Genuine wealth lies in wisdom and reverence for God, while even a ruler is honored for the size of his following. It is essential for him to embody patience, humility, and to show kindness to the less fortunate. A leader's understanding and integrity will uplift those he governs, and his favor is bestowed primarily upon his loyal servants, especially those who are humble, as humility is esteemed in the eyes of God.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The true witness will rescue the unrighteous from their iniquities, while the deceitful witness will undermine the flattering deceiver. A principled witness who provides honest testimony in a legal setting protects the blameless from distress and aids in their vindication; conversely, a dishonest witness who fabricates stories entangles the innocent in turmoil.
