John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The riches of the wise serve as their crown. Are you suggesting that the wisdom of a person is represented by their wealth? Indeed, it is said, not because the wealth enhances their honor, but due to their ability to utilize it properly and not derive any harm from it. Hence, one might ask, why do the foolish possess riches? It is because the foolish are unable to attain true wisdom.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

While someone is prosperous and filled with joy, they find themselves surrounded by numerous companions; however, when they fall into poverty, they are quickly abandoned (19-23). True wealth lies in wisdom and reverence for God (24-27); even a ruler is esteemed by the size of his following (28), and he should be characterized by patience, humility, and compassion toward the less fortunate (29-32). His wisdom and integrity will lift his people up, and the king's favor rests upon his loyal servants (33-35), particularly those who are humble, for humility is also commendable in the eyes of God (15, 1-4).

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The foolish individual suffers, as they refuse to seek counsel and disregard teaching; their fate is one of hardship. When they strive to secure their livelihood, their efforts lack skill and yield little reward. In contrast, a wise person gains prosperity through not only diligent but also thoughtful work. The riches earned through such endeavors become their true honor—bringing them glory and acclaim. No one will fault them for their wealth, as it is evident that they have attained it without causing harm to others and through just means.
