The Church Fathers on this verse

4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

At the core of goodness resides wisdom and understanding. This wisdom is established, deepened, and safeguarded, much like a treasure in a secure location. The foolish are unable to perceive this wisdom, for it cannot inhabit a vessel surrendered to sin.

John Cassian

5th centuryChurch Father

If you deeply seek to gain spiritual understanding, your first aim should be to earnestly request from the Lord the gift of pure chastity. It is impossible for anyone who remains under the influence of fleshly desires, particularly the desire for sexual immorality, to attain spiritual insight. True wisdom resides in the hearts of the righteous, and those who revere the Lord will discover knowledge along with righteousness (Proverbs 14:33).

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

When one enjoys prosperity and happiness, they find themselves surrounded by numerous companions; however, once they fall into poverty, those friends quickly abandon them. True wealth lies in wisdom and reverence for God; even a king gains honor through the vastness of his followers. He must exemplify patience, humility, and a willingness to lower himself to the needs of the poor. His wisdom and integrity will uplift his people, and the king's favor is reserved for his loyal servants, especially those who are gentle, as humility is esteemed in the eyes of God.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

A righteous heart serves as the true vessel of understanding, for genuine wisdom is rooted in virtue and cultivated through a heart that embraces goodness. Authentic wisdom cannot exist apart from virtue. A learned individual lacking a good heart misuses their intellect, mirroring the devil—the most astute creature—who displays his brilliance solely through wicked schemes. Such individuals, in reality, merit the label of foolishness; within them, wisdom remains hidden and unrecognized. They intentionally blur the lines between righteousness and sin, mistaking darkness for light and vice for virtue. They may be described as sly and deceitful, but they are far from wise, for true wisdom is found only in a good heart.
