John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

A hopeful disposition, characterized by purity and confidence in God, is deemed righteous through one's own righteousness. This is because salvation is not attained through the actions of others, and such a person is safeguarded from destruction.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

As long as one enjoys happiness and wealth, he is accompanied by numerous companions, but once he falls into poverty, he finds himself abandoned. True wealth lies in wisdom and reverence for God; even a king is esteemed by the size of his following, and he should embody patience, humility, and compassion towards the less fortunate. His wisdom and integrity will uplift his people, and a king’s favor is shown primarily to his loyal servants, especially those who exemplify humility, for humility is regarded with honor in the eyes of the Lord.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The distinction between the fate of the wicked and the righteous is clear. The wicked neglects to place their faith in the Lord, refusing to acknowledge their reliance on God due to their malevolence and corrupt mindset. They aspire to secure their own welfare through personal strength and wisdom, but because of their wickedness, they will be cast aside by the Lord, finding themselves abandoned when adversity strikes.

Their faith and humility draw the favor of God, ensuring that during times of trouble and hardship, they will not be forsaken. Instead, they will discover support and protection in the Lord, remaining steadfast in all circumstances. They uphold holiness and righteousness not only in times of blessing but also in periods of suffering. This highlights the divergent destinies awaiting the wicked and the righteous.
