This passage refers to those who genuinely embraced martyrdom for Christ, in contrast to those who are false martyrs. The Scriptures affirm, “The name of the wicked shall be blotted out” (Proverbs 10:7). A true witness speaks the truth, while a false witness spreads many lies (Proverbs 14:5). Therefore, anyone who has perished for the sake of truth during martyrdom is a legitimate martyr—someone deserving of faith, having fought for the cause of godliness even unto death.

The righteousness of such principles espoused by the sage can be easily illustrated through examples. A wise person, described as a devout individual, possesses everything in order: his household is harmonious, his words are insightful, his livestock are robust, and he serves as a trustworthy witness in legal matters. In contrast, one should not expect to find such virtues in a husband who lacks wisdom.

This passage speaks of a court of justice where some individuals serve as honorable witnesses. These individuals are dedicated and earnest, consistently committed to speaking the truth regardless of the setting; their integrity does not waver when they are summoned to share their testimony regarding the defendant. They will reveal the truth based on their moral convictions and cannot be swayed to commit perjury, regardless of persuasion, promises, or threats. Conversely, there exist false witnesses, individuals who lack integrity. These persons are willing not only to provide deceitful testimony in court but also to propagate lies.
