It is written, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord’ (Matt. 3:3). This means to be ready to embrace the principles that Christ intended to establish; turn your heart away from the shadow of the law; abandon the reverence for graven images; and disregard evil thoughts. Make the paths of your Lord straight (Matt. 3:3). Each path where goodness prevails is direct, smooth, and effortless; conversely, the one that is corrupt leads those who traverse it towards their demise. Concerning such individuals, it is noted: whose paths are devious, and who stray in their ways (Proverbs 2:15). Thus, a mind that is straight, like a direct path, knows no diversions.

As Jesus gazed upon Jerusalem, He was filled with sorrow and lamented, “Oh, if only you understood, even today, what would bring you peace! But it is now concealed from your sight” (Luke 19:41-42). He spoke these words when He predicted the city’s downfall. Our Savior continues to express this anguish through His chosen ones each day when He witnesses individuals straying from a righteous path into sinful deeds. He disciplines them, yet they fail to grasp the reason for their suffering, as, according to Solomon, they are among those who take pleasure in doing wrong, finding joy in wickedness (Proverbs 2:14). If they had comprehended the impending judgment, they would have mourned for their fate.

19th centuryCommentator

They intentionally evade the straight path in all manners, much like thieves who prefer to approach their targets through indirect and convoluted routes to avoid detection. Metaphorically speaking, these winding ways and crooked movements represent the devious schemes and immoral tactics in which the wicked are perpetually engaged, ensnaring the unsuspecting to lead them away from the righteous path, the true way of living...
