The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings joy to their parents and, if they hold a royal position, brings honor to their nation; yet a flatterer merely deceives his neighbors, and a rogue stirs up trouble in the city. Even a wise person who partners with a fool cannot find tranquility, and is consistently despised by the wicked. The integrity and righteousness of a leader greatly influence those close to him and impact the wellbeing of the community; similarly, proper upbringing shapes a son’s future, and discipline influences the conduct of a servant. It is evident that the unrighteous instigate strife among others, degrade themselves, and harbor hatred for their own soul, while the just receive honor and assurance from the Lord’s protection. The paths of the wicked are detestable to the righteous, and in turn, the righteous face animosity from the unjust.
