One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings delight to their parents and, if in a position of authority, brings honor to their nation; however, a flatterer merely deceives those around them, and a wicked person stirs up trouble in the community. Even a wise person who consorts with a fool cannot find tranquility, and they are constantly despised by the unjust. The integrity and righteousness of a leader impact their closest allies and the well-being of their community, just as a strong education influences a child's future and discipline shapes a servant's conduct. It should be clear that the unrighteous fosters strife among others, brings disgrace upon themselves, and despises their own being, while the righteous receive honor and refuge under the Lord's protection. Furthermore, the path of unrighteousness is detestable to the upright, just as the righteous are often scorned by the wicked.
