2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The teacher imparts to his young followers the wise counsel of his parents, cautioning them against the allure of foreign women, while encouraging them to seek joy and love within their own households. He emphasizes this pursuit should be undertaken without hesitation, for all of man's paths are accessible to God, and stepping outside of divine law incurs severe consequences.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The idea expressed here echoes that of the earlier verse. A wayward individual faces the risk that all he has earned through his labor and effort may end up benefiting outsiders instead of being used to provide for himself and his family; the outsiders will be nourished, while you and your loved ones will remain in want and destitution.
