The Saviour intertwines will and reason in relation to Himself, treating them as equals, proclaiming, "My counsel and confirmation, My reason, My strength." Just as approval and refuge are inseparable, so too are counsel and reason.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The wise individual is receptive to the call of wisdom itself. She proclaims her message to all from elevated and bustling locations and, recognizing that she embodies truth and significance, illustrates her divine nature and actions as the hypostatic Wisdom. She grants her adherents power, abundance, and success; she collaborates with God the Creator and shares in the act of establishing the world. Now she extends an invitation to all to heed her teachings, promising to impart wisdom and joy. The Lord established me as the beginning of His paths, in His works.

The Hebrew text here uses the term 'kanani' meaning 'acquired,' thus suggesting that rather than the Greek term εκτισε meaning 'created,' it should more accurately be translated as the holy fathers have interpreted (Athanasius, Eusebius in their disputes with the Arians) as εκτησατο meaning 'acquired,' consistent with interpretations by Aquila and others, and reflected in the Vulgate translation of Psalm 138:13.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

Protection from evil and danger in both personal and communal contexts is attained and sustained through guidance, which consists of practical strategies devised by human understanding. However, human understanding must not overlook its reliance on Divine Wisdom, which is rooted in the mind of God and is light derived from His radiance. The true influence of God's wisdom on the human intellect often goes unrecognized, yet it remains genuinely effective. Only Divine Wisdom possesses the complete counsel, rationale, and strength needed to ensure the fulfillment of its purposes for humanity's benefit; without this divine assistance, human wisdom lacks true efficacy.
