Augustine of Hippo

The just and blameless, not merely in their physical presence alongside the wicked, but united in spirit, shared in the same purity and moral integrity, surrounded me: for I have not strayed to emulate wrongdoing; instead, I have patiently awaited Your arrival, hoping to witness Your final reaping.

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

Virtue uniquely rejects association with individuals who exhibit weakness or poor character. Instead, it seeks companionship and friendship with those who uphold truth and embrace righteousness. The prophet, reflecting on himself, acted similarly, believing that in doing so he honored the Lord.

Ephraem the Syrian

Hold onto a person who reveres the Lord, dear ones, yet avoid associating with the indifferent.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Virtue uniquely inclines one to detest the actions of the wicked, while embracing as companions those who uphold fairness, are led by justice, and are devoid of immorality. The prophet proclaimed this of himself, believing it would be pleasing to the Lord.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

The wicked and the leaders have attached themselves to me, for I have endured affliction while placing my trust in You, O Lord. In this passage, David reflects on a prior experience. Earlier, he expressed that he had anticipated Your assistance, O Lord, and was not left in disgrace, but instead received what I sought. This drew many others to share in that fervor, as they were persuaded by my witness that You alone are the ultimate and faithful protector. These individuals have united with me, becoming cherished companions who depend on my love in all matters, because I have acted justly and, relying on You, have awaited Your aid. Who are these individuals? They are the faultless, that is, virtuous and righteous people, akin to the just.

Hence, since I have encouraged them to place their trust in You, listen to me, O Lord. Theodoret aptly remarked that true virtue abhors the company of the wicked and seeks companionship with those who value integrity and are devoid of wrongdoing. This is reflective of the prophet's own sentiments, as he believed this would earn the Lord's favor.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

In the prior verse, he expressed his desire not to be put to shame due to his reliance on God. He explains why he fears disgrace when abandoned by the Lord: many virtuous and just individuals, inspired by his example, have placed their faith in him, particularly because they observed his unwavering trust in God. Should his hope prove misguided, he would feel embarrassed and humiliated in front of them.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

The patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs who share in the sufferings of Christ, empowered by the promise of salvation, remain steadfast in their devotion to God. This also holds true for those who seek repentance and those who are brought forth through baptism.
