Augustine of Hippo

Guard my spirit, so I do not follow their example, and rescue me from the confusing paths I must navigate in their presence. May I not feel disgrace if they come against me, for my trust is not in my own strength, but in You.

Guard my spirit and rescue me. Safeguard my spirit so I may not falter in following Your examples; lead me away from the turmoil they have caused in my life. Do not let me be dismayed, for my hope is in You. (Ps. 24:20). May I not feel disgrace if adversaries unexpectedly confront me; for my trust is placed not in my own strength, but in You.

Theodoret of Cyrus

If I have broken any of your commandments, I have not distanced myself from your divine care; thus, I earnestly ask you to protect and rescue me from those who stand against me.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

Guard my spirit, says the Lord, my spirit, so that it does not fall into the grasp of my wicked foes; and by my spirit understand, dear reader, the physical form, which exists and is directed by the spirit. And rescue me, says the Lord, that I do not succumb to the power of my adversaries. This may also be interpreted as: protect my spirit from unseen foes—evil spirits—and deliver my body from those who are visibly attempting to seize it. Let me not be ashamed, since I have placed my faith in You. I know, He says, that all who seek Your aid will not be disappointed but will obtain their wishes, as expressed at the beginning of this psalm (Psalm 24:3); I will not be put to shame because I rely on You and therefore anticipate Your assistance.

Cassiodorus the Senator

The arrival of the Christ When he pleads for deliverance, he is invoking the presence of the Lord Christ, through whose sacrificial blood the redeemed have been liberated from the chains of the evil one.

It was as if he were expressing, "I find myself encircled by countless adversaries from all directions, and I lack the strength to fend them off. Therefore, I turn to You in prayer, asking You to protect my soul and rescue me from their grasp."

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

O Lord, guard my soul and fortify it with patience, that it may remain steadfast in cultivating virtues and hopeful in Your mercy. For those who place their trust in You, the Compassionate God, will not be put to shame.
