Augustine of Hippo

Therefore, beloved, those individuals whom you observe within these walls are obstinate souls, filled with pride and self-interest, displaying no fervor for the purity and soundness of God, yet they credit themselves abundantly; they are eager for conflict but find no opportunity, resembling the chaff on the Lord’s threshing floor (Matthew 3:12). Thus, these few are carried along by the winds of arrogance: the entire threshing floor will only be affected when He ultimately concludes the harvest. What are we to do but join in song with this individual, pray alongside him, and weep with him, confidently proclaiming, ‘With peace He shall redeem my soul’ (Ps. 54:18). Against those who do not cherish peace, my soul shall be redeemed with peace.

For I have reconciled with those who despise peace. He will deliver my soul in peace from those who approach me. With those far from me, the situation is simple: he who says, ‘Come, worship an idol,’ will not easily deceive me; he is indeed distant from me. Are you a follower of Christ? The Christian declares. From a nearby place, he stands as my adversary, within reach. He will, in peace, redeem my soul from those who draw near to me, for they have frequently walked alongside me. Why did I say, ‘Draw near to me’? It is because they have shared many experiences with me. Two points arise in this verse. In numerous ways, they were aligned with me. We both shared in baptism, as they were alongside me; we both read the Gospel, they were there with me; we commemorated the feasts of the martyrs, they were present with me; we participated in the Solemnity of Easter, they were there with me. Yet, their alignment is not genuine: in schism, they are not with me; in heresy, they are not with me. In various aspects, they were with me, yet in several others, they were not. However, in the little where they were not with me, there bears no benefit from the multitude where they were allied with me. Consider, brethren, the many teachings of the apostle Paul: he asserts that if any aspect is missing, it renders all in vain. If I speak in the languages of men and of angels, he states, if I possess all prophecies, faith, and knowledge; if I can move mountains, if I distribute all my belongings to the needy, if I surrender my body to be burned (1 Cor. 13:1-3). He has highlighted many aspects! If even one of these lacks love, the former are plentiful in number, while the latter carries more significance. Thus, in all Sacraments, they are with me; yet in love, they are not with me. In several matters, they were with me. By another phrasing: they were with me in various ways. Those who separated themselves from me were, in fact, with me, not in a small measure, but extensively. Across the world, there are few true grains but many tares. Therefore, what does he declare? In the chaff, I had them, but in the wheat, I did not possess them. The tares closely resemble wheat, having grown from a singular seed, taking root in the same field, nourished by the same rain; the same harvest awaits, the same threshing is prepared, yet they will not enter the same granary.

I will stand beside you in numerous situations, for many have come together against me, seeking to take my soul from me.

Theodoret of Cyrus

The phrase "in multitude be with me" indicates that the adversaries are plentiful. Simmachus interprets it as "for very many were against me."

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

In tranquility, He declares that the Lord will effortlessly rescue my spirit from those aligned with Saul, yet who are also David's relatives and comrades in battle. He further explains their closeness by stating that they were my allies, along with many other warriors, and that they fought alongside one another. Theodoret interprets the phrase, "They were with me in multitude," as referring to numerous adversaries, a sentiment echoed by Simmachus' translation. In multitude they rose against me, indicating that there were many who sought to distress my soul. At the conclusion of this psalm, Euthymius notes that the phrase: in multitude were they with me, effectively means: with many were they against me, reflecting a reciprocal use of prepositions.

Isychius remarks that these words are spoken in relation to Christ. This can refer to the soldiers who stood guard at His tomb, the false witnesses who bore false testimony against Him during His trial, or the forces of darkness that were near Him, filled with dread, observing Him in hopes that He would not liberate the captives of the grave from hell.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

David, confident in the assistance of the Lord, expresses newfound hope and asserts that God, having rescued him from impending conflict, will restore the tranquility his soul desires. The subsequent phrase, "As many as were with me," can be understood in two ways. Some view it as referencing the numerous foes that battled against David, while others interpret it in relation to the angels who vigilantly protect us and oversee those who revere God, as stated in Psalm 33:8. The latter interpretation offers a deeply comforting doctrine; although God does not require the aid of angels, in His grace, He employs many ministers for our salvation. However, it is perhaps more appropriate to interpret this as a reference to enemies, as David, by highlighting their number, magnifies the might of God who rescued him from their grasp.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

This psalm, composed under the guidance of the Holy Spirit by David, was entrusted to Asaph, the leader of his singers, so that it could be performed with understanding by all. The essence of this psalm culminates in Christ, particularly through His unblemished Passion. The entire world is enveloped in darkness, every individual is deceitful, yet the Lord has come to redeem the first Adam. Let us implore God to bestow upon us the Holy Spirit, enabling us to approach Him with reverence and to quell the malevolent winds—the very sins residing within our souls and bodies. He renders this salvation beyond comprehension for those who perpetually yearn for, hope in, and diligently seek Him.

Sergius Ternowski
