Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

These mighty ones fell because they failed to direct their strength towards You; they who stood against Me relied on their own abilities. Yet I will direct my strength to You, for if I turn away, I falter; but if I come closer, I gain fortitude. Consider, dear friends, what exists within the heart of humanity. It holds no light on its own, nor strength by itself; rather, all that is noble within the soul is grounded in virtue and wisdom, virtue inherent to itself. There exists a distinct source of virtue and a foundational root of wisdom; a realm of unchanging truth, from which the soul, when distant, becomes enveloped in darkness, but as it draws near, is illuminated. Approach Him to be transformed into light, for distancing yourself leads to shadow.

Thus, I will direct my strength to You; I will not stray from Your presence, nor rely on my own understanding. I will maintain my strength in You, for You, O Lord, uplift me. Consider where I have been and where I currently stand. From what depths have You redeemed me? What sins have You pardoned? Where have I rested? For what purpose was I raised? I should keep this in mind, as another psalm reminds us, ‘For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord has taken me to Himself.’

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

I will maintain my refuge in You. They have acted wickedly in Your presence, yet I am the messenger proclaiming these truths by the Holy Spirit. I will safeguard my stronghold and my realm through Your protection, for You have become my guardian. In response to my prayers, You have surrounded me with Your compassion, and as a result, I have witnessed the downfall of my adversaries.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Prophet declares, I have You as my defender and the source of my strength, for I rely on Your guidance in my life.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

Some interpret David's statements as reflections on his own situation, indicating that he would not seize the kingdom by the death of Saul but would wait for Your timing to grant it to him, for You are his powerful Supporter. Athanasius also remarks that they have acted unjustly against You; however, as a prophet speaking through the Spirit, I trust that my authority and reign will be safeguarded by You, who are also my Defender. In the spirit of Nicaitha, I will refrain from claiming the power and dominion by killing Saul; instead, I will place my hopes in You, anticipating that it will be granted to me by Your hand, for You are my Aid, the Almighty One.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

For this reason, he also submits to the mighty hand of God in humility, hoping to receive mercy, as if to express, ‘You are the source and protector of my strength. I find safety in Your providence; thus, I do not rely on my own abilities but rather entrust my strength to You. My trust in Your protection is not misplaced, for You are my God and advocate. Since my youth, You have shielded me, and You alone do I revere. I state this with assurance because Your mercy has gone before me and, as I believe, will continue to guide me, preventing my untimely downfall. Even now, You will provide assistance against my adversaries.’ This reflection by David about himself holds true. From an early age, he received divine warnings and was empowered by God’s grace to defeat a lion, a bear, and the formidable giant Goliath, all while unarmed. Moreover, he was anointed for kingship in his youth.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

The exile of David in his dwelling, as a result of Saul's pursuit, represents the entombment of the sinless body of Christ the Savior in death. This serves to ensure that the truth is inscribed not only on a physical monument but also in the hearts of the faithful, bringing eternal glory and honor to God. This psalm expresses the sincere plea of Christ the Lord to God the Father during His redemptive suffering. The Lord Jesus did not commit sin; rather, He guided sinners back to the path of salvation. Have faith in the Gospel, for at the Last Judgment it will be proclaimed to the unrepentant: Depart from Me, accursed.
