It is not easy to watch over our unworthiness, and to extend to us subtle spiritual suggestions that are often drowned out by our crude sensuality.
It is not easy to endure our defects and infidelities, sometimes to withdraw by necessity from our impurities, yet not too far.
They must again watch for favorable moments for a beneficent approach to us. At times, finally, they must grieve without consolation over our impenitence.
Think on this without levity, son of dust.
If the inhabitants of heaven do not count it base or unpleasant to descend from their blessedness to the wretched earth for a labor saving to you, will you dare reject any necessary labor as base or unpleasant?
Beware only of base motives, which alone make labor truly base.
What do they do there, in the invisible heaven, who stand closest before the throne of the Almighty?
According to the seer of mysteries, they "have no rest day or night, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty" (Rev 4:8).
What does "have no rest" mean?
It does not mean that they are exhausted by unceasing doxologies, as by labor without rest.
It means that, finding joy and blessedness in doxologies, they do not wish to cease doxology, just as they do not wish to cease joy and blessedness.
If someone were to say that this is above us, I would answer this man, who fears height out of place, that even in our lowly life on earth we must prepare for the exalted life of heaven.
For earth is a nursery and school for heaven.
Therefore we must train ourselves at least in some beginnings of what is done in heaven, so that after earthly life heaven may not reject us as unfit.
