In the opinion of some, this bears witness that after the resurrection the sea will burn with a purifying fire, together with all who live in it. If the mention of a third part is also unsuitable here, because, as was said, those tormented will be more numerous than those saved, then this incongruity can be removed by applying these words to the present life. This life is figuratively called a sea. In that case, the destruction of a third part of all living things is also confirmed. By the unsearchable judgments of God, some quickly receive punishment, while others, by His longsuffering, are led to repentance and conversion. By the mountain, I think, we should understand the devil.

Inflamed with rage against us and kept for Gehenna, he will, during the time of his permission, scatter over the sea and destroy a third part of the islands, ships, and their inhabitants. He once did the same to Job. According to the judgment of God's justice, he is our enemy and avenger. For whoever is overcome by another and submits to him becomes his slave (2 Pet 2:19). Finally, there is nothing strange or unreasonable if spiritual death overtakes those who blaspheme the Holy Trinity in the sea by the deeds of their life and by their words.

In the opinion of some interpreters, the great mountain here figuratively names the greatness of the persecutions raised against Christ's followers throughout the vast Roman Empire.

In those times Christian blood was shed in an incredible quantity, compared here to a third part of the sea.
