The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The wrongdoings of these sons included unfaithfulness and excess in eating.

When they learned about their sons' sinful acts, they, too, engaged in unfaithfulness. They were unaware of the Lord. See Jn. 7:28.

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

Samuel endured the unacceptable behavior of Eli's sons, who were wicked and unacceptable to the people, rebuked by divine truth, and tempered by God’s anger. He also bore with the prideful people, who had strayed from the Lord. Let those who are eager and capable reflect on the heavenly message conveyed to us. They should recognize that all the saints demonstrated immense patience among their communities, especially towards those viewed as servants and friends of the Lord.
