Listen to what the Lord has declared: ‘I will protect this city to deliver it for my own honor and for the honor of David my servant’ (4 Sam. 19:34; Is. 37:35). But when did this happen? Under the just reign of Hezekiah. If the prayers of great sinners had efficacy, then why did God not make the same declaration during Nebuchadnezzar's siege, instead choosing to hand the city over? It was because wickedness had proliferated. Similarly, the prophet Samuel interceded for the Israelites with great success. But when did this occur? When the people themselves were righteous, and thus they triumphed over their foes. Yet, you may wonder, why do I need the petitions of others when I myself am pleasing to God? What is your reasoning, dear friend?

Paul did not inquire why he needed prayers, even when those praying were unworthy and less than deserving; yet you question the necessity of seeking prayer. Peter did not say, "Why should I pray?" despite the scripture stating that ‘the church prayed earnestly to God for him’ (Acts 12:5), prayers that immediately freed him from captivity; yet you still ask, why is prayer needed? It is essential for you to recognize what you deem unnecessary for yourself.
