John Chrysostom
Many were distressed about him, particularly those who had joined Absalom in his rebellion, as though he had been abandoned by Divine Providence. They remarked, "Now David has been cast aside, completely without support; God has turned away from him, just as He once did with Saul. As He distanced Himself from Saul and was with David, now He has forsaken David and aligned with Absalom; let us rise and attack him, for there is no deliverance for him from God." Hearing this, David, grieved more by their words than his son's rash actions, turned to God and pleaded, "Lord! How have my adversaries increased? How many are rising up against me?" (Psalm 3:2). Regarding Psalm 3, what can we say about flattery, humility, and subservience? Siba offered insincere praise to David while maligning his master; even more so, Achitophel lavished praise on Absalom.
