The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

You are to seal the vision, as it will come to pass after many days. Gabriel, having clarified the vision to the extent of our understanding, ended his explanation by stating that you shall seal the vision because it will indeed be realized after many days. The term "seal" indicates that the content is confidential and not readily available to the ears of many, nor can it be comprehended before its actual realization.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The vision concerning the evening and the morning of the prophecy is indeed authentic; it signifies that the appointed time for the hardships is certainly real. However, since there lies a significant duration before these events are realized, it is noted: You shall make the vision known for a long time, which means it will remain unclear to many. For you, as one who is open to understanding, I have revealed it to you prior to its occurrence.
