The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I bear witness to you today, with heaven and earth as my witnesses, that I set before you the choices of life and death, blessings and curses; therefore, you should choose life and love the Lord, so that you may continue to live in the land that He promised to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Lord has indeed brought to fulfillment the promises He made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for they held a deep love for Him. I call upon heaven and earth to attest to this truth. This conveys the significance of the statement added: that you may inhabit the land which the Lord swore to your forefathers.
