Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

“Rejoice, O Zebulun, in your exodus.” This expresses the joy experienced by the Gentile nations as they transition from ignorance to understanding and from falsehood to profound truth. “And Issachar, in thy villages.” This signifies the joy of the holy apostles in their celestial dwellings, for they have received places from which sorrow will vanish (Isaiah 35:10).

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

To Zebulun and Issachar, He grants promises of triumph in battle and divine assistance, addressing Zebulun, who resides by the shore, and Issachar, who lives in proximity. He declares that they will thrive through fervent prayers and partake in the offerings of righteousness. The abundance of the sea will bring them prosperity, allowing them to acquire from those who inhabit the coastal regions. Those who live near the ocean not only benefit from their own produce but also gain from the wealth brought in from various places.
