2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Summoning the nations to the mountaintop. Through the proclamations of the apostles and prophets, the summoned nations emerged from the depths of sin to ascend the spiritual mountain. ‘The riches of the sea shall bring them up, and the treasures hidden in the sand.’ This illustrates the transformation of all nations through the apostles. Overwhelmed by the burden of sin and engulfed in impurity, they were unable to cross into the spiritual sea; however, the apostles created a pathway for them, allowing their passage into the enlightened harbor.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

To Zebulun and Issachar, the former receives a promise for triumph over adversities as they reside by the coastal regions, while the latter is assured support and blessings in his vicinity. He declares that their voices will resound, and they will invoke His name, partaking in the offerings of righteousness. The abundance of the sea will be their recompense, and they will acquire goods from those who dwell by the shore. Those living near the sea do not solely benefit from their own harvests, but also from the treasures transported from afar.
