Who do these two eunuchs, stationed as gatekeepers at the entrance of the king's palace, represent if not the scribes and Pharisees among the Jews? It was noted that they held the key to wisdom yet refused to enter themselves, nor did they permit others to enter. In their jealousy over the teachings and qualities of the Savior, they sought to rebel against the king and conspire to take His life. They constantly devised schemes against Him and secretly coordinated with Roman authorities to find a means to eliminate Him. The Gospel states: Then the Pharisees went and took counsel on how to entrap Him in His words.

They sent their disciples along with the Herodians to Him, saying: ‘Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth, and do not show favoritism; therefore, tell us: what is Your opinion? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? (Matthew 22:15-17). In another passage, we find: The chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council and said, What are we to do? This man performs numerous miracles. If we let Him continue this way, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation (John 11:47-48). Shortly thereafter, it is noted, From that day forward, they plotted to kill Him (John 11:53).
