Is there anything that surpasses eternity? Who can make such a claim? The addition of "and also" may serve to underscore the concept of true eternality, as the term “eternal” can sometimes be misconstrued to imply a duration that is merely lengthy. Alternatively, it may be included to affirm that the Lord perpetually reigns in the heavens, as He has established them forever; He has decreed a statute that shall not be abolished (Ps. 148:6), and that for eternity He will rule over those who have received forgiveness after turning away from the transgressions of His commandments. He has redeemed them throughout time, granting them everlasting joy, and even now, the Lord governs those whom He has chastened with righteous judgments under the burden of His people.

For none are excluded from the reign of Him whose eternal law governs the distribution of gifts, and the administering of rewards and penalties, to which all creation must submit. For God opposes the proud, but grants grace to the humble (James 4:6).

19th centuryCommentator

The song of Moses reaches its conclusion with a declaration of the Lord’s everlasting sovereign authority, proclaiming that the Lord reigns over all creation; however, His immediate royal inheritance is found in His chosen people, who form His sacred domain (Ex. 19:6). The Lord’s reign is eternal, for He is Himself ageless, and His kingdom, established among His chosen ones on earth, will persist through the New Testament Church until the culmination of time.
