In this, the might of God was even more clearly revealed, as the excess that was typically rendered unusable on other days remained whole on the fifth day, the day preceding the Sabbath—which signifies a time of rest—thus preserving its freshness as if it had been gathered that very day. The fact that the items designated for the Sabbath were not harmed in any way carries a meaningful teaching: it is beneficial to be eager for what remains unspoiled; it is fitting for us to engage in good works, especially knowing that after this life and upon reaching the fifth day—following our passing—we shall experience a time of rest. The day before the Sabbath serves as preparation for that holy rest, mirroring our current existence in which we ready ourselves for what is to come.

In this present life, we refrain from performing customary tasks, be it agriculture, commerce, military duties, or any earthly engagements; instead, by living in serenity away from these labors, we will harvest the fruits of the good deeds we have planted in this life. These fruits are everlasting if the seeds are sown righteously, but they are transient and perish if born of corrupt practices. As it is written: “He who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life” (Galatians 6:8). The idea of preparation for what is greater is aptly referred to as a heel, as mandated by law, and what is set aside in this manner remains incorruptible. However, a different interpretation should not label it merely as a heel but rather as the transformation of the heel itself. Thus, the record affirms the heel alone that facilitates prosperity while allowing the alternate meaning to be grasped through its very silence.
