The elders remarked that these were the seventy leaders who had previously accompanied Moses on Sinai and witnessed the platform upon which the Lord manifested His presence. As Moses ascended the mountain, he instructed the seventy elders accompanying him, saying, “Remain here quietly; it is unnecessary for you to come with me to the mountain where you have previously been alone, stay at peace here.” In this moment, Moses likely gestured towards the camp of Israel. He appointed his brother Aaron and his brother-in-law Hur, who was married to his sister Miriam, as his representatives. They were entrusted with the responsibility of judging the people of Israel in Moses' absence.

As recognized by many scholars, the phrase 'follow me not' conveys a significant message. It is clear from Exodus chapter 32 that Aaron and the elders returned to the encampment, where Aaron created the golden calf amidst the people. Hur, the son of Caleb, is identified by Josephus as the husband of Miriam, Moses' sister. During the confrontation with Amalek at the mountain close to Rephidim, he was present alongside Aaron and Moses (Ex. 17:10-12). His prominent standing among the people is evident, as he, along with Aaron, was appointed to lead the people during Moses’ absence.
