John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The phrase '...the cloud took him up' (Acts 1:9) signifies the embodiment of God’s sovereign authority, as no other force is symbolized by the cloud. Reflect on the words of another prophet: 'The Lord shall ride upon a swift cloud' (Is. 19:1)... Furthermore, on Mount Sinai, when Moses stepped into darkness, the cloud was present not for Moses, but for the honor of Christ.

The manifestation of the Lord's glory likely resembled what is depicted in Revelation 19:19. For six days, Moses remained in an expectant state, a condition bestowed upon each believer to test their faith. He devoted himself to prayer and preparation to receive God’s commandments. Anyone who diligently works for righteousness cannot overlook what lies ahead. This was especially vital for Moses as he was getting ready to receive divine instructions, which would serve as the foundation for formulating a complete set of sacred laws as well as civil and criminal regulations.
