Ephraem the Syrian
The stronghold of trees that have stood for a century may be shattered by hail, yet the flames within the hail do not harm the gardens, vineyards, or even the boundaries.
And the hail destroyed through all the land of Egypt all things that were in the fields, both man and beast: and the hail smote every herb of the field, and it broke every tree of the country.

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse
The stronghold of trees that have stood for a century may be shattered by hail, yet the flames within the hail do not harm the gardens, vineyards, or even the boundaries.
We will observe shortly that not every part of the harvest was lost. However, the wheat and fruit crops that were threshed faced complete devastation from the hail; those men and livestock who were caught in the fields without refuge were perished. Such destructive hail, resulting in the deaths of both people and animals, was witnessed in numerous locations.
