The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

A man shall not reside among you in the land, nor shall you dwell amidst him in sustenance: upon the hills of Israel, I will render judgment upon you. And you shall be taken away, as I am the Lord. You will not meet death within the city, declares God, nor will you receive the honor of burial there according to your desires; instead, you shall perish far from it. Providing further clarity, He adds: For you do not walk in My commandments, nor do you uphold My decrees; rather, you submit yourselves to the verdicts of those around you. The highest degree of injustice, and the most severe condemnation of evil, lies not merely in transgressing God's law, but in pursuing greater wickedness than the nations who thrive in iniquity.
