The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

They will come to recognize that I am the Lord when I turn my gaze toward them. I will bring destruction upon the land, for they have strayed into sin, declares the Sovereign Lord. I will lead them into captivity and slaughter, transforming the land they tend into a desolate wasteland; there will be no workers remaining, and this will serve as a punishment for their transgressions. Hence, the writings that have been recorded are meant for our instruction (Rom. 15:4), allowing us to find hope through perseverance and the encouragement of Scripture. We shall not become like wood, hay, and stubble, which are destined for fire, but instead be true gold and precious stones (1 Cor. 3:13), fit for a royal crown, that we may reign alongside Christ. To Him, to the Father, and to the Holy Spirit belongs the glory, forever and ever! Amen.
