2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

They will emerge from the flames, and through the flames, I will be revealed; they will evade the sword, yet the sword will encounter them. They will find deliverance from Egypt, only to become captives in Babylon.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Therefore, declare this: This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Just as the grapevine among the oaks, which I allowed to be devoured by fire, so will I deliver judgment upon those who inhabit Jerusalem. And I will turn My gaze towards them. In speaking these words, he employed a metaphor reflecting those who exhibit a fierce and intimidating countenance. They shall emerge from the flames, and the fire shall reveal My presence. When they are rescued from famine, they will be struck down and taken as captives. They will be led away, for I am the Lord, and I will direct My gaze upon them.
