The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

You will recall your actions, it is said, and you shall experience shame when you find yourself alongside your elder sisters as well as your younger ones. This consequence suggests that, upon reflecting on your own behavior and recognizing the glory that rests upon you, you shall come to understand your Lord; yet, you will also realize that these sisters share the same promise with you, and it is better to acknowledge that you will accept it alongside them. I will provide you the opportunity to build, not based on your covenant. It is not through them that you will flourish, but you will benefit from their existence; for it is not the current covenant that sustains your life which will create this unity, but an everlasting covenant that will be granted in the life to come. The Prophet's mention of Sodom and Samaria signifies all the nations, as well as the Jews, heralding the future piety and faith in one God, established by this new agreement.
