The prophet portrayed Jechoniah, the son of Jehoiakim, as he spoke of those taken captive and who had reached the end of their lives in a foreign land. This raises the question of why he did not mention Jehoiakim, who was executed in Jerusalem. The iniquity of Jechoniah is succinctly conveyed; he reigned for a brief period of three months and a few days, during which he caused much bloodshed in the city. That the reference is to Jechoniah rather than Jehoiakim is confirmed by the subsequent statement. For it is written:
